Must See Summer Date Movies
If you and your girlfriend or your future dates are looking for something fun to watch this summer, it looks like you will have plenty to choose from. There are suspenseful thrillers, groundbreaking animated movies, and even a fairytale or two to enjoy—as well as, of course, those superhero movies that we all know and love that—dare I say it?—might even inspire a romantic evening afterward. Here are just a few highlights that are on my list:
Snow White and the Huntsman: Unlike Mirror, Mirror, which opens this week, Snow White and the Huntsman is a very dark tale that seems somewhere between a fantasy and horror—with plenty of creatures and darkness combined with an Erzebet Bathory-like queen. This looks utterly amazing, and even though I am not a big Kristen Stewart (who plays White in the film), I still can’t wait to see it. Charlize Theoron plays the evil queen, by the way, and I have yet to find fault with anything she’s ever portrayed.
The Avengers: This comic book adaptation will feature the previous movies featuring the heroes of the group—The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Black Widow—though not all of their actors will be returning. Sadly, the one I looked forward to the most, Edward Norton’s reprise as the Incredible Hulk, will be replaced by none other than the dreary Mark Ruffalo. Still, I look forward to seeing Hemsworth play Thor again, and though I haven’t seen Captain America just yet, Johanson and Downey Jr. are always entertaining.
Dark Shadows: My apologies to all of the original fans of the Dark Shadows series who will likely endure the same kinds of hurt and disappointment that I felt when watching so many book to film adaptations throughout my life; I feel your pain. That said… I cannot wait to see this movie! I have no ties to the original series and it looks like a dark yet funny foray into another Tim Burton world, which I always enjoy, and I love every single actor/actress in the film. Eva Green is in it! That’s not being highlighted much (especially since it also features Michelle Pfeifer, the lovely Helena Bonham Carter, and of course, Johnny Depp—as well as the new hit sensation Chloe Moretz), but ever since I saw her in Golden Compass I’ve wanted to see her in more fantasy films.
